25 Amazing Blue and Purple Hair Looks

Is it time to make a change? Are you looking for your newest hairstyle / cut / color but not sure what direction to go with? What about these looks – stunning blue and purple hair looks that you know will turn heads for all the right reasons. Before you think these looks are too bold for you, take a peek at how cleverly they’ve been blended into hair designs you’ll definitely want for yourself… Katie Perry has done it, Demi Lovato too. Is it time you went over to the blue and purple side?

1. Dark Purple & Teal Blue Hair

Katy Perry has gone for looks similar to this one – dark and bright shades of blues and purples together. It’s a bold look for sure, but one that looks amazing when braided or curled to let all the highlights and lowlights shine through. If you want to play around with color but you don’t have a great place to start, why not this?

2. Pastel Blue & Purple Hair

This hair is stunning – very unicorn-like. This hair is actually very easily created and if you play your cards right, could even be achieved without even trying. Fading your brighter colors out to this is super easy, and when touching up your color, make sure to add conditioner to the bright shades you used before to dilute them down. Little tip – it makes them more pastel and powdery!

3. Blue and Purple Bob

Your hair is made up of protein so in order for it to be as bold and bright as you want, you’ll need to make sure your locks are protein-packed. There are plenty of shampoos and conditioners out there with ‘keratin’ as an added ingredient. We’d highly recommend starting with these, washing and conditioning your hair with them for a few weeks BEFORE you start your lightening and coloring treatments.

4. Purple to Dark Blue Ombre Hair

While we’re on the subject of protein, there are some homemade hair masks you can use to increase the protein in your locks. We can’t express this enough – you will not have the look you want if you don’t take care of your hair before, during and after the coloring process. Avocado, coconut oil, egg whites, mayonnaise and more have all been successfully used on the hair to increase protein and keratin.

5. Blue and Purple Ombre on Blonde Hair

Blonde hair gives you the perfect starting place to play around with any color, so why wouldn’t you play around with an ombre of bright blues and purples, just like this stunning look you can see here? The good news with hairstyles like these is that they can be customized to completely suit you. If you don’t want quite so much color, leave more blonde at the top, and add the blues and purples to just the ends of the hair. This ombre is stunning and we love it, but you could always add more or less.

6. Light Blue Hair with Purple Roots

It’s like the color of the most beautiful oceans and that’s probably why we love it. This cute little look just goes to show that you don’t need long locks to show off a beautiful array of shades and colors. This one incorporates shades of turquoise blue with purple just at the roots. If you’re thinking of a way to liven up your roots and grow out the old blue at the same time, this one is definitely it.

7. Purple Hair with Blue Highlights

You could always go the other way around, of course. More lilac / purple at the roots and just a touch of blue peeking through towards the bottom. There’s the odd chunky blue highlight in this mane of purple, and the twisted loose waves help to show the various shades off brilliantly.

8. Blue & Purple Pixie Style

And another classic little example of how you can do these blue and purple hair looks even when you have super short hair, this pixie style is not only super adorable, but super low maintenance too. Shorter hair is always easier to style and maintain and as you can see form this look, a few up-top spiral curls are all it takes to liven up your ‘do. Of course, it gives you the perfect opportunity to show off those beautiful shades too. What’s not to love?

9. Blue and Purple Metallic Bob

There are ways you can make these lighter, brighter styles work for you without having to go through the whole serious lightening treatments before hand. A washed-out look can often work over darker natural hair, and you can make your roots a darker shade than the rest of your hair when growing them out to give you a little extra time before bleaching again. Who said colorful hair like this had to be too high maintenance?

10. Gorgeous Combo!

Opting for beautiful hair styles like these colorful creations is going to wreak havoc with your hair, especially the lightening treatments you need to go through beforehand. If you already have damaged hair, the colors won’t take as brightly and as nicely as you can see here. They’ll look blotchy and uneven. There are things you can do to make life easier, and the first of these things is to go for the chop – get all the dead bits cut off the ends of your hair. You can still opt for something bold and blue / purple like this, but just a shorter version of it. It’ll soon grow back but it won’t grow at all if you don’t cut off the dead bits.

11. Dark Purple Hair with Blue and Teal Lowlights

What works for you might not work for someone else, and vice versa. If your friends have had great luck with one brand of hair dye but you’re not having the greatest success with it, don’t give up home of achieving beautiful blue and purple hair looks like this. Instead look at using a different brand. There are so many to choose from these days, there’d bound to be one you like. With vegan specialities, henna, and more, there has never before been so much choice when it comes to coloring your hair.

12. Pastels

If you want long locks with loads of color thrown in but you’re not sure you want to make such a serious commitment, try clip-in extensions instead. You can add as many or as few as you like, and it gives you a chance to play around with your colors and shades, giving you new ways to incorporate blues and purples together.

13. Dusty Ombre Look

When you have your color done, whether you do it in the salon or at home, make sure you keep up with the maintenance too. When you’re washing blue and purple hair, it can be hard to touch-up the color without mixing them up, but one tip we’ve found especially helpful is to use a silver / grey shampoo. When you’re washing with this, the color fades with more of a powdery and pastel finish, making it look like that was the effect you wanted in the first place. We’ve been fading our hair out with grey / silver shampoo for a long time and now we swear by it!

14. Dark Blue to Purple Ombre Hair

While you’re rocking your bright and colorful blue and purple hair looks, make sure you leave your hair straighteners to one side. There are lots of ways to recreate curls without resorting to heated tools, but straight hair isn’t so easily achieved. Rock your natural waves for a while, your colorful hair will love you for it.

15. Blue Hair with Purple Peekaboo Highlights

If you want to go for a big color change like this but you’re not sure where to start, clip in extensions worn with your natural coloring can tell you whether or not the tone and shades will suit your hairstyle, face shape, and even skin tone. Sometimes you’ll need to play around a little with shades before you find one that’ll work perfectly with your skin tone. This is something that an experience hair stylist will be able to help you with.

16. Vibrant Blue and Purple Hair Looks

When you have long hair, you have the length to play around with styles of hair-blending that you wouldn’t be able to play around with if you had short hair. Why not experiment while you have the opportunity? If you’re planning on cutting your hair short soon, have some color thrown in first. If you’re going to cut your locks off anyway, what have you got to lose? There are loads of benefits to going for the chop… Having blue and purple hair looks like these beforehand is a definite pro!

17. Split-Dyed Hair Look

Haven’t you seen? The new Suicide Squad movie is coming out soon and in it, Margot Robbie plays the part of Harley Quinn – the girl with half pink and half blue hair. We love this little recreation – one of the girls here has even copied the look for herself. It’s a great, fun way to experiment with, and the purple and blue tones in this are seriously too cool for school.

18. Light Blue & Dark Blue Braided Hair

We love the streaks of blues and purples mixed into one here, a really random blend, hand-painted of course, but one that works really well. If you don’t want to commit yourself to one shade, mixes like these are perfect. You can mix things up as much or as little as you want, and you can create all sorts of stunning looks out of it.

19. Blue, Purple & Pink Hair

While we’re on the subject of making your ‘do last longer, try to keep washing your hair to once or twice per week. We know that sounds bad but there are ways you can do this without walking around like you’ve just crawled out of a greasy deep fat fryer. You can use hats on the really bad days, and curly hair is the perfect way to cover-up two-day old roots. Dry shampoo gives you a little extra life between washes, and you can even look at different updos. That’s what we do when we can’t be bothered to wash ours!

20. Purple Melting into Teal Blue

If your hairstylist tells you that they can’t do all the work you want in one session, make sure you listen to them. All that work on your hair will damage it, and if they try to do too much, you won’t end up with a beautiful mane of purples and blues, but instead hair that is like straw to touch or, even worse, breaking and falling out. Sometimes a look like this will take a few sessions to get right. It’s okay for it not to look right the first time – the color will generally be more conditioning so this bit you can do more than once. It’s the pre-bleaching that you only really have the one shot with.

21. Dark Purple to Blue and Light Purple Hair

The more you wash your hair, the more these blue and purple hair looks will fade. The good news is that it will fade to a look like this – a pastel version of its former self. The fade-out can sometimes look as good as the initial color of your hair, so don’t be afraid to leave it a bit longer before appointments.

22. Short Hair Look

The lighter, brighter and bolder you want your color to be, the whiter your hair will need to be to start with. It’s not easy to go from a darker brunette to blue and purple hair looks like this, and you’ll often find that your hair will become so damaged from the pre-lightening treatment, the color won’t take at all. Be realistic about your outlook – if you want to go for something seriously bold, you’ll need to be prepared to put in the leg work before hand.

23. Vibrant Blue and Purple Locks

It’s fun being a colorful girl but if you want blue and purple hair looks like this, you’re going to need to start with a great, clean and fresh blank canvas. Even if you plan on doing all the coloring itself at home, make sure you get your bleaching and lightening treatments done by a professional, preferably at a salon. You might even want to consider using them to get your color off to a good start too. You can easily switch-up and touch-up the color at home yourself afterwards. It’s getting going that is often the hardest part.

24. Purple Hair with Blue Face-Framing Highlights

Face framing highlights is a great way to play with shades you wouldn’t normally play around with. If you fancy going lilac but you’ve been told that particular shade of lilac (that you’re seriously lusting after) won’t work for your skin tone, do it anyway, but have the hair nearest to your skin a different shade, just like these turquoise hints. It’s all about compromise and sometimes when you want the brightest looks, you need to learn to be a little flexible.

25. Jaw-Dropping Ombre Hair

If you’re dying your hair at home and you want to achieve a really bright and vivid look, just like this purple to dark blue ombre hair, leave the hair dye on for a bit longer than it says on the packet. We’ve always found that although it says half an hour, the color normally needs longer than that for the full effect. If it says half an hour, we generally opt for 45 minutes to an hour, checking as we go. Usually the bleaching and harsh treatments are done before you put the color on, and most colors have some sort of conditioning treatment in them, so technically you’re allowing extra time for the conditioner to work it’s magic too.

So there you have them – 25 AMAZING blue and purple hair looks that we think you’ll be seriously lusting after right now. We can’t wait to see what you come up with – remember to follow us on social media and share your crazy creations!
